Corporate Exercise at the Honor Academy

This morning my alarm began to ring as I rolled out of bed preparing for another morning of corporate exercise with the Honor Academy Interns.  We are in our second week of Gauntlet and in our second morning of this week doing corporate exercise.   Corporate exercise in the Honor Academy has been a staple part of the program since the early 1990’s.  We believe that it is important for the interns to learn to discipline themselves in a number of ways during the year and corporate exercise helps the interns begin to discipline themselves physically.  I tell the interns frequently that I do not want to wake up when my alarm goes off at 5:30am, but I do wake up.  I tell them that I have a number of excuses ring through my head on why I do not need to attend corporate that morning, but I do not listen to them.  Instead, I wake up, like the rest of them and get ready to head out the door with my son and drive to campus.

This morning, I took the interns through a modified Kenpo workout for about 35 minutes.  We were not able to go on a two mile jog this morning as it was in the low 30’s.  The workout this morning consisted of us doing many movements with our arms and legs.  The goal was to get our heart rate up so that we could all receive a good cardio workout.  Some of the other workouts that we do during the morning are core workouts, leg workouts, jump training, push-ups, and the like.  We always invite parents to our morning corporate workouts and any alumni that would like to join us.

Question:  If you are an alumnus of the Honor Academy, what was your favorite workout during corporate exercise?

The PEARL Life Transforming Event

The PEARL Life Transforming Event begins late Wednesday night. I will be uploading video’s of the event starting Thursday morning on this blog. Please come back and watch these Interns, Graduate Interns, Youth Workers, and Parents as they encourage one another through this impacting event. My wife went through this Life Transforming Event back in 2008. It was awesome to see her push herself and to lean upon her team for encouragement. Honor Academy Endurance Life Transforming Event

We had our Endurance LTE on Saturday. The Endurance Life Transforming Event is a 10k where interns have the opportunity to push themselves in this event and also have a lot of fun. We built the course on the campus of the Honor Academy last year and it is challenging. The course goes throughout the entire campus. This year we decided to open up the event to people in the community and we had around 75 people sign up for the event. I had my camera with me on Saturday and took a little bit of video:

Question: For those of you that ran the race or watched the race, what was your favorite part?

ESOAL 12–Five months later

It has been almost five months since we had ESOAL 12 on our campus.  I've been part of 11 of the 12 ESOAL’s in one way or another and each year is different. The overall theme I saw in the interns this year was choosing joy. They continually encouraged each other to choose joy.  Some people finished ESOAL and some rang out, but everyone who experienced it was impacted in a significant way. During ESOAL 12, I received an email from an alumnus that went through ESOAL several years ago.  This alumnus was following the video posts on trailerclub.blogspot.com (You can go to that site and see many videos of interns and their parents commenting on their experience of ESOAL) and sent me an unbelievable email of her experience at ESOAL and how that experience has shaped her in her current role in life.  I hope it will inspire and encourage you in wherever you're at in life right now.  Here is her story: Read the rest of this entry »

“God Said”

Words.  Speech.  Conversation.  Communication.  Words are powerful messengers. I remember when my Junior Varsity Basketball Coach, Bruce Miller, spoke to the team about one of our games.  He looked at each of us in the eyes and spoke to us.  When he turned his eyes to me and spoke to me about a play I made during the game, it meant so much to me. So much that I remember that moment today. I remember when my kids first started to speak.  I enjoyed their first babblings and the way they jumbled up their words.  But before long, their garbles turned into beautiful words as they learned to untangled the thoughts in their heads and pick the right words to match.  We could have a conversation! Recently, I was impacted by the words “God said,” which I read over and over again in Genesis 1 & 2.  God said—and spoke the universe into existence.  He spoke to His creation.  He spoke to Adam.  Wow!  God said. If we treasure words spoken to us by a friend or family member, coach or teacher, what about when God speaks to us?  The God who spoke in Genesis chapter 1 and 2 is still speaking.   Are we listening?
